while we would like to take the time to update links, we can't. so there.

112602  ::  well, all set click here to see the recipe of which you've dreamed.with registration. i am ready for the 12 (gasp!) hours i will be taking this spring. in the meantime, i think i made headway towards finding a certain recipe that this family certainly loves.
112202  ::  i'm heading down the homestretch to registration. read the entire blow-by-blow experience here.
102802  ::  for once, here are some personal bits of info. started the ball rolling to get back to escuela, aka utep. more to follow.

put up a short selection of photos documenting the front door project.

finally made headway on the genealogical front by locating a GED file that crosses paths with what i had so far discovered. see the current worldconnect rootsweb GED
102002  ::  experienced the cornfield maze on a full moon night with screaming gurlies with moms and dads in tow. cold, damp and great fun!
091302  ::  mark your calendars for full moon nights! september 22 and october 21. it's that time of year again. time for The Maize Maze in La Union, New Mexico. "Get Lost in History 2002" is the title of this year's maze. The maze offers: a conquistador, Mount Cristo Rey, El Paso's missions and symbols of the First Thanksgiving that some say was celebrated in the area. more information can be read at this eptimes article
081502 :: YACC (yet another Call Center) Do we really need another call center? A friend attended a "no name" Fortune 500 job fair. Evidently, they are looking to place it on the Westside. My only wish is they put the call center out by the Northwestern warehousing area and not again in some large vacant retail space.

My fear is someday, a call center will be placed where the old Furrs Emporium was located, next to Coronado High School. That's all we need, another heard of cats to avoid running over when they are out for a break or leaving work.

These companies really need to do their homework and understand what El Paso is like. Just because we look like we speak Spanish fluently, we don't. In fact, many 2nd and 3rd generation Hispanics (myself included) do not necessarily speak/read/write Spanish well enough to be called bilingual.

In addition, do these types of businesses really help the El Paso economy? To me, it is just a new form of low wage industry that takes more out of this town than it gives.

081402  ::  just returned from a short trip to colorado. pitiful. the overgrazing going on in the southern part of the state is really scary and the overbuilt apartment and housing complexes ala Dallas' Los Colinas make me cringe. to top it off, the snowpack is extremely low in Aspen and Vail. what should look like the area near las vegas, new mexico looks more like our far east side of town but without the native vegetation. they will be the new dust bowl within 2 years.

one bright spot was our lunch date in georgetown (elev. 13,050 ft.) favorite t-shirt slogan: GOT OXYGEN?
080702  ::  in the any press is good press recipe book—take a controversial poster, mix in a cupful of local reaction and you get something to warm up sluggish sales and interest for "Lucia di Lammermoor".

in the world of e-commerce one thing remains constant—change! and this is just what my favorite SWATCH source has done! way to go squiggly.com.

finally, for a great way to write and get noticed at the same time, try the usually pricey Sailor's "Innovation" gel pen. such a deal, too!.

073002  ::  wow! what a summer! and now, a big hurdle has been jumped.

city council has voted in favor of allocating $14 million for the restoration budget of the Plaza Theater, in Downtown El Paso. Soon! updates to the plaza page and add photos  taken during a recent tour. congratulations to epcf and the city of el paso.

in addition to citizens pledging on the spot, a trend i hope continues is the announcement by one business to donate all materials for the signage. way to go!

051302  ::  great news, 3 area high school seniors will be receiving $20,000 each from the coca-cola scholarship fund. i knew there was a reason i liked them better'n that other liquid candy drink.

years ago we dropped our subscription to texas monthly when we moved to santa fe. with so-called feature articles like this, it is easy to see why we never re-upped even after we moved back home.

now, if they ran a real story about this west texas town, maybe we would reconsider. but i doubt they will. we don't score high enough on the interior decorator/plastic surgeon/ gated real estate revenue producing list (aka ads) to rate consideration of a feature article.

muchas gracias to mr. leon metz for calling this article to our attention.

051002  :: new ways to show how art and public disobedience can be combined are always welcome here.

in LA, richard ankrom saw a problem and took care of it. if you have a fast connection, be sure to watch the video about how he constructed and "hung" his work of functional art.
050902  :: well, it seems the dallas morning news has really stepped in it this time. best of luck to barkingdogs.org and their endeavors to properly cover stories concerning  neighborhood issues—with or without deep linking.

this story is interesting because it pits a big corporate entity against the little guy. it seems the DMN and even the city of Dallas does not like its citizens criticizing commercial enterprises, even when their patrons behave like, well dogs!.

see, bars pay sales taxes which add to the coffers of the city. and these same bars also pay for ADVERTISING in papers (their websites) and  tv stations. so it wouldn't do for people living in the neighboring vicinity of these bars to complain about public urination and illegal parking. that would be bad for business and bad for the city's budget.

finally, thanks to public citizen for representing avi adelman and barkingdogs.org.

042802  ::  the painted ponies have arrived and a new project titled "Art and Sol" is underway. modeled after the ponies, this new arts project with allow 25 to 30 area artists to decorate giant fiberglass suns.

see jerusha lang andrade's painting for a planned parenthood fundraiser. excellent! and congratulations.
042202  ::  just in time for earth day, this was received in the mail today. moore's rural new yorker. saturday, july 11, 1868.
042102  ::  i never knew this camp was above our old neighborhood in casa solana, santa fe.

saturday, a ceremony was held at frank ortiz park  ("dump park") to dedicate a monument near what was a japanese internment camp.
photo ca. 1943 by terrel a. jackson, el paso, texas. looking down mills towards the mills building.

041202  ::  aside from adding some devl and apps links, not much was going on except beautiful weather.

today though, i received a message saying the latest issue of segundo barrio is up on their site. for me, the best part was reading Courtnay Randleman's essay.

03.28.02  ::  i think a lot of people besides the eppd would like to know how this car got into this predicament.

03.27.02  ::  went looking for a small graphing calculator app for babygoth's algebra homework. i found one and along the way i found the pinkmonkey website.

among other things, this website has links to the TEA's TAAS example exams and other exams including the new york state regents tests.

TAAS examples are for the 3rd grade - exit exams. you can take the test exams, get results pretty quickly, and an answer key is provided.

exams used are from the 1998 and 2000 tests.

great list as i couldn't find the exams easily on the TEA site.

and the calculator? see it here: Graphica Math Kit 1.1 (freeware) helpfile included

03.18.02  :: Excuse me, what planet do his eyes live in

"I don't see El Paso being a place where you have billboard pollution, so to speak."

Eastside Representative, Dan Power quoted in the Monday, March 18 edition of the El Paso Times

03.04.02  :: Fred Morales spoke at the quarterly meeting of the El Paso County Historical Society and a good time was had by all. On March 16, he will be conducting a bus tour to sites that played a role in the Mexican Revolution. An article in today's Times has all the details.

02.18.02  ::  ok, the tipping point for all this has been attained. seems blogging is now mainstream media subject matter. if these sites and wired finally notice the trend, can a sit-com be far behind? especially, if pc mag's dvorak doesn't appreciate the effort of the masses.

according to the wired article, at least 41,000 people created new blogs using Blogger in january alone. this, figure was supplied by evan williams, who runs the weblog service.

wired also states some have put the total number of weblogs at more than 500,000.

i can believe it, everyday i find more and more interesting sites. there's even a site that categorizes by the birthday of the blog creator.

02.10.02  ::  as stated:

everything is held together with stories.
that is all that is holding us together...
stories and compassion.

barry lopez
brokensaints.com

a wonderful site, though you need a fast connection.

02.07.02  ::  getting popup ads for items you are searching for when using google? the culprit is from a company named flashtrack.

"FlashTrack's site offers an uninstall program to get rid of the program. McAfee, which classifies the program as a Trojan horse, suggests a more sure-fire approach: Search your hard disk for a file named FTAPP.DLL, and remove it.

02.06.02  ::  standing up for his precinct and city, this rep supports of the plaza renovation plan. so does the rest of council.

"It's part of our history. It's in the heart of Downtown El Paso, and it's an amenity that people want when considering moving to El Paso," he said. "They want culture in Downtown. They want spirit, and they want soul."

anthony cobos

02.02.02  ::  it's official. blogging is now part of the mainstream culture. evidence? this article from time and another from the bbc.

2.2.2  ::  02.02.02
02.02.2002

i love it! the ultimate graphic date. and not another for a while!

seems like every 10 years santa feans have to shot themselves in the foot as far as over-development goes in the cramped downtown district.

first, it was the "ugly bank building" on washington street, closely followed by the eldorado hotel. now this...another over-priced hotel.

02.01.02  ::  although, she has been a "good sport"—coming to el paso for fundraising, etc., it turns out this supreme court justice wasn't too keen on living here.

"'I was always homesick when away from the ranch.' This is, after all, the story of life on the Lazy B, not of Sandra's painful acculturation to city life."

nytimes review of "lazy b"

01.31.02  ::  paper doll artist tom tierney has been up to no good again. just out from dover publications: GW and His Family Paper Dolls.
01.27.02  ::  question. how do you fit 100,000 people into the santa fe plaza during Indian Market weekend?

answer: you can't.
so says a new study conducted for the southwest association of indian arts (swaia).

last year's number was just under 44,000 visitors.  but the direct monetary impact was $19.2 million.

"That was an estimate no one seemed to know where it came from and was probably urban legend," said Eddie Dry, a UNM professor who headed the new study conducted for the SWAIA.

santa fe new mexican

the survey was the first ever study ordered of the market since its inception in 1922.

01.26.02  ::  if you are not a genX knitter, but into assemblage, mail art, etc. look no further than silvercrowcreations for unique items, great prices and friendly service. where else can you find watch parts, ephemera grab bags and blank tarot decks?

now, what do you do with your fanciful treat now that it'swww.nervousness.org done? why, join a swap, what else. start with nervousness.org or 20things.

not to be confused with nerve.com, as websense has been known to do on occasion.

now they need wait no longer as, once again, cinco puntos press has scooped the publishing world. Ms. Hinajosa will be here at the ep museum of art on 01.23.02  for a reception for this wonderful new book.

don't trash the pass

from stantonstreet.com's news rap column we read about the El Paso Pride project sponsoring its third “Tu Comunidad: Keep it Clean, Make us Proud” environmental summit.

The summit presented an El Paso ad campaign built around:

“Don't Trash the Pass”, hidden surveillance cameras at hot spots to catch illegal dumping, new TxDOT designs for intersections and medians around town.”

12.31.01  ::  turning a page, but not its back, the nytimes said it will publish a hard-cover collection of the obituaries in the spring, with the proceeds going to the Times' Neediest Cases Fund.

the times today said it will close its "Portraits of Grief" section in the daily paper, but archive on the website.

more than 1800 momentos of lives lost on september 11 were written by 110 reporters and ran on ad-less pages in the newspaper.

the ktsm website has located The Magestic Movie Website a Plaza Theatre link on "The Magestic" movie website.

, then on to "Movie Palaces". from there, click on its movie palaces picture link, 3rd row down, 3rd from the left, to view information about the Plaza. we only hope the rosy verbiage regarding its status as a work in progress is true.

12.07.01  ::  up and out of the house! cheers to the byrds for their new digs.

12.06.01  ::  after a few days of being kicked around an off-topic list, we found a source for those arthur c. clarke predictions made in 1999. among our favorites:

12.05.01  ::  "For the past two weeks, our only focus has been the case. We haven't talked about anything else," (Detective Arturo) Ruiz, a father, said. "It's affected all of us."

it was through good, "old- fashioned" police work that facilitated an arrest. one now wonders how they will ever find a jury in el paso and if parents will now get a clue.

060102  ::  literally ran into the second annual El Paso Gay Pride parade this morning. such a fun, flag-waving bunch they were too. there they were, with American, Texan, and rainbow flags, rowdy floats and paper doves on stems flying above it all.

and there i was, looking down Montana Street at a happy colorful happening just waiting to get started. they paraded down to Mesa Street and turned towards the Plaza. guess they ended up near the new OP.

this occurred after I read
